Business Training
Business Planning Programme

If you are looking to start your own business or you have bought a small business and unsure whether it will work, the Business Planning programme is for you.  Designed for those individuals who want to broaden their business knowledge with a view of creating new businesses or enhancing their current business operations, this programme takes a hands-on approach to delivering relevant strategic principles that you can apply immediately.

What is Business Planning and what does it involve?

The Business Planning programme is designed for individuals who are in business or are looking at entering into business.  The delivery is hands-on and practical supported by real-life challenges that incorporate relevant business exercises and assessments.  More importantly, you will have developed a comprehensive business plan for your business or business idea. 

Module Title Module Description
Introduction to Small Business  Management             

Understanding business fundamentals in New Zealand small business environment is essential to being successful.  This particular module focuses on the business planning process including:

  • Strategic Profiling such as Vision & Mission Statements, Business Goals & Objectives, Organisation Culture and Values
  • Internal and External Analysis
  • Developing and Evaluating Alternative Strategies
Introduction to Business Law

Setting the 'bones' for the business is important. This includes learning the following:

  • Understanding legal business structures and business ownership profiling
  • Compliance to business regulations, legislations and consents
  • Application of Legal terms & Concepts
  • Developing Legal Contracts & Intellectual Property
Introduction to Marketing

What is Marketing?? Where do I start??  Understanding marketing principles and strategies in real - life business situations can be very frustrating.  That is why, in this module you will learn the following elements:

  • Conduct, Analysis & Evaluate Market Research data
  • Identify core target audiences for your product/service
  • Establish a Comprehensive Marketing Plan covering the 7 P's of Marketing
Introduction to People Management

For business growth to occur, you may need to consider employing or contracting others to your business.  This module deals with key topics pertaining to the New Zealand employment  landscape and operating an efficient business as well as:

  • Develop robust yet flexible HR Performance Processes from Induction to Employee Termination
  • Create a sound and comprehensive Recruitment Process
  • Operationally forecast for business growth and development  
Introduction to Small Business Accounting

For a business to succeed you need to understand your finances.  This module provides a background to basic business mathematics and accounting concepts and you will learn how to:

  • Successfully complete Cashbooks, Bank Reconciliations & GST Returns
  • Understand fundamental Accounting Practises & Terminology
  • Develop and utilise Basic Financial Reports
Introduction to Financial Management

This module provides the student with the ability to complete a Financial Plan based on previous business information.  In this module you will learn how to:

  • Forecast the financial viability of their business or concept
  • Understand and successfully complete Statements of Financial Performance & Financial Position
  • Complete Cashflow & Expense Forecasting
  • Understand and Apply Break Even & Ratio Analyses

Student Fees & Costs

This programme and all resources are offered at no cost to all participants through Te Wananga o Aotearoa. 

Entry Criteria

All participants must be a NZ citizen or have permanent residency, be aged 16 years or older at commencement of the programme and be able to show commitment to the completion of the programme. Participants must also either have an existing business operation or a relevant business idea or concept.  

Teaching Staff

Our team of Facilitators include Business Owners, Accountants, Business Consultants, HR Generalists and Marketing Consultants.  They are also experienced in the area of  adult education and the delivery of business principles.  Guest speakers are utilised throughout the programme, as are current business practitioners in the local area. All facilitators possess NZQA 4098 qualification.

  • 1 DVD, Text Book, Dictionary, Business Diary & Student Handbook
  • Business Plan Template Workbook (Hard & Soft Copies)
  • Media and Marketing Scrapbook
Delivery Format

The Business Planning Programme is a 36 week programme delivered one night per week for 3 hours (6.30pm to 9.30pm), with an additional 2 workshops per module delivered 10am to 1pm.  Each of the 6 modules is delivered in a classroom environment over a five – eight week period.  The delivery of the programme are located throughout Auckland.

The next semester will be commencing week beginning of March 2013

Information/Enrolment Sessions

It is important to attend an Information/Enrolment Session so that you are given more information as well as meet the Facilitators.  An enrolment form is completed at these sessions and is part of the acceptance process. In order to complete your enrolment form you must also provide the following documentation:

  • A certified copy of your NZ birth certificate OR passport (with proof of residency if you are not a NZ citizen)
  • If you are not using the name shown on these documents, you will also need to provide documents showing the change (e.g. marriage certificate)
  • IRD number and
  • Indicate which location you would like to attend
